Smart Communications has piloted remote-controlled antenna positioning to improve network coverage without repeated manual adjustments at the tower.

Turning a fixed antenna into a flexible network asset

Working with HUMAX Networks and system integrator Telkha, PLDT and Smart tested the Optical Compass and Robot Arm (OCRA) system at an existing cell site. The trial targeted a hospital in San Juan and a nearby high-rise condominium.

The pilot paired OCRA with a Vega High Gain Antenna. Smart reported improvements in signal strength, quality and speed at both locations. Remote adjustment allows engineers to respond to coverage needs while reducing physical visits.

A practical step toward remote optimization

For network teams, the trial illustrates how sensing and actuation can work together to improve the usefulness of infrastructure already in the field.
